British Columbia is a popular vacation and relocation spot, known for its milder winters and gorgeous scenic views. But for many property seekers, one of the foremost questions is where to settle in British Columbia. Many choose the capital city, Victoria, for its waterfront culture, metropolitan size, and close proximity to many parks and mountains.
The cost of living in Victoria is above average for the surrounding area, and as the 15th largest metropolitan area in Canada, it has a lot to offer. Victoria BC real estate offers a number of upscale neighbourhoods, historic charm, and overall relatively low major crime in the area.
Saanich is one of the city’s more upscale areas, located northeast of downtown Victoria with a population of just over 100,000. The eastern side of Saanich largely centers around the University of Victoria, a school of about 20,000 that plays a large role in shaping community life. There are many parks, bicycling routes and golf courses for outdoors enthusiasts. Some of the more vibrant neighbourhoods in this region include Gordon Head, an established neighborhood near shopping malls and movie theatres; Broadmead with uniquely styled homes and businesses, and seaside Cordova Bay dotted with farms, cottages and larger homes with scenic views of the rural surroundings.
Just south of downtown, James Bay is the oldest neighbourhood in Victoria. It is home to many historic landmarks and Victorian-era residences that were owned by the area’s original settlers. Adding to the charm of this well-established neighbourhood is the fact that the buildings have been treated with utmost care and upkeep, retaining much of their original charm. With a population of around 11,000, this quaint, affluent area boasts the charming James Bay Village with coffee shops and retailers, impressive lodging including the historic Empress Hotel and James Bay Inn, and a number of maritime options like Fisherman’s Wharf.
Among the "western communities," as they’re known, sits Colwood, originally a large farm established in the mid-19th Century. Colwood incorporated in 1985 and is now a thriving and quickly growing residential area home to many historical landmarks like Hatley Castle and Fisgard Lighthouse. Colwood is one of the fastest growing areas in the suburbs of Victoria and offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities just six miles from downtown Victoria.
In the downtown area itself, there are numerous luxury condos and executive suites to be had. The downtown area is known for its thriving nightlife and cultural opportunities, making it a vibrant and exciting place to live. And because Victoria BC is such a hot spot for tourism, property downtown can also be a terrific opportunity for real estate investors.
There is something for everyone in Victoria BC real estate, from the young, growing family to well-established, affluent older couples. Whether inclined toward outdoor recreational activity, quaint village shopping or downtown culture and nightlife, Victoria has something in store for each individual’s interests.
